"To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget."

you added me on twitter, not sure why, but glad you did... read your post on the challenging of black male masculinity via cudi/ye/weezy...gorilla zoe had a song [sorry can't think of lyrics right now] that got some airplay some months ago that had me thinking similar thoughts--i would say in general though it's kinda hard to pinpoint shifts cuz although i can't think of lyrics, i feel like there have been so many songs by black men about needing to be fucked up to make it through life, or having a fatalistic view to life [hail mary by 2pac comes to mind] but i guess the songs you listed more concretely pull together all the disparate elements (drug use, pain, violence) in the most direct way. and i know you're probably like ok but why is this in response to arundhati roy--well that's simply because i LOVE arundhati roy!
ReplyDeleteok anyway peace & love!
